Our Story

I started asking a lot of questions after a summer in Kenya. When shopping for clothes back in the states, I no longer just glanced at the price; I glanced at the tag to find out where something was made as well. I started to put faces behind the production of clothes.
I went on to work with small fair trade groups in India and Honduras. From these experiences, I saw first hand how the production of our clothing is linked to the well being of so many people. These small fair trade workshops gave women in developing countries a source of income which not only improved their wellbeing, but they were able to send their kids to better schools, and ultimately had more ownership of their lives.
So I started caring about where my clothing came from.
As a girl with a fashion degree and a bit of a fabric snob - I had a trouble finding clothes that I wanted to wear that were created in this slower manner.
One summer I started Liz Alig as a collection of a few dresses. It was kind of an experiment to see if it would be possible to make clothing entirely out of recycled materials. Back in 2009, this was one of the only sustainable textiles available.
From this first collection of dresses, we have gone one to partner with small fair trade workshops in over 10 countries. We have produced thousands of pieces a season to boutiques and large retailers back to selling directly to you online.
My goal is the same as in the beginning, to make beautiful clothing (that I really love) that is produced in a slow and meaningful way.  Our clothing is still made with recycled textiles plus handwoven cotton, farmer sourced wool and hand knit natural sweaters.
It has been such a pleasure to know the people who sew our clothes for years! We are grateful for your support!

Clothing Care

When in doubt do not use heat. In most cases machine wash cold, line dry and cool iron when needed. For specific instructions visit the product page.

Hand knit alpaca and wool pieces should be hand washed in cold water and dried flat.

Do you offer custom or small adjustments?

Sorry, we can't offer any adjustments to the pattern that is set. Any changes (even very minor) cost us an additional 3x the production cost because pattern development is so costly.
